The road to Sulawesi

Mon, 24 Mar 2003 10:59:48 -0000 (Asia/Kuching)

Near as I can tell, nothing is happening either in Sulawesi or Kalimantan.

A traveler who returned from Manando shortly before the 15th, finds North Sulawesi calm. North Sulawesi is majority Christian and relatively relaxed anyway.

No reports of new risks in either Sulawesi or Kalimantan.

Demonstrations in Java, though less than had been expected. A terrorist threat in the city of Surabaya, on Java. But then, I knew Java was dodgey. I never intended to do anything more than skip through. Current plan is to fly from Makassar to KL, skipping clean over Java.

The "new" warning from the State Department isn't new at all. Aside from Surabaya, it is exactly the same as it has been for months.

I am proceeding cautiously to Tawau tomorrow, with the expectation that I will cross over to Kalimantan on Wednesday. (modulo the Pelni boat schedule to Sulawesi)

If you hear anything about the situation that you think I should know, feel free to respond.
