Set down in sunny, sultry, Sarawak

Say that three times fast...

Not a lot to report. After staying up all night I took an early morning flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo.

I spent the first day deliberately wandering about the town. The second two days, I was supposed to go out to see Oragutans at the wildlife rehabilitation center. But I'm having the trouble with the buses. Yesterday, I arrived late. Today, the bus never came. Thus, the only critters I've been photographing are made of stone.

Kuching supposedly means "cat" thought it's not clear in what language. The local Malay dialect uses another word for cat. Regardless, much is made of Kuching being cat city and there are large statues of cats at some intersections. Oddly, there don't seem to be all that many real cats around.

More verifiabley real, the region is known or black pepper and head hunters. No head hunting going on now, of course, but tribes still have their skull collections. Wood carving is the other big thing. I went to the Sarawak museum yesterday. Among other things, they make totem poles. They're much more intricately carved than the North American ones but lack color.

I will deal with the bus to the rehab center in a few days. It may not matter. What I'm hearing is that fruit is so abundant right now that orangutans don't bother coming to the feedings. Tomorrow and or the next 3 days I will be at Bako National Park, looking for various kinds of monkeys, bearded pigs, and whatever other critters I can find.
